Tembotrione Market Research Study For Forecast 2020, Challenges, Demand, Woldwide Overview
Tembotrione, 2 – [2 – chloro – 4 – (methylsulfonyl) – 3 – [(2, 2, 2 – trifluoroethoxy) methyl]benzoyl] -1,3-cyclohexanedione, commonly known as tembotrione, is a selective post-emergence herbicide of the triketone chemical class. It has been developed to control the wide range of broadleaf and grass weeds in cornfields. Tembotrione is also used for post-emergence control of glyphosate, dicamba and ALS inhibitor weeds.
Bayer CropScience AG launched tembotrione in 2007. Initially, the herbicide was approved only in countries such as Austria, Hungary, Brazil and the U.S. Currently, Bayer CropScience holds the patented technology and is the only manufacturer of tembotrione globally. The basic patent is set to expire between 2015 and 2020. However, tembotrione has been granted an additional five years of data protection after the basic patent expiry. This would restrict competition from generic versions globally for five years after the patent expires.

Bayer CropScience operates the only manufacturing facility for tembotrione in the U.S. The crop protection industry has been facing challenges due to the increasing resistance of various weeds against different herbicides such as glyphosate, dicamba and ALS inhibitors. The ability of tembotrione to control glyphosate resistant weed is anticipated to be one of the key drivers for the global demand during the forecast period. Various pesticides (active ingredients) are launched annually in the crop protection industry. Currently, a number of herbicides such as atrazine; 2,4-D, dimethyl salt; clopyralid; and acetochlor can be used in corn fields.
Tembotrione is primarily used in seed corn, sweet corn and popcorn crop fields. Additionally, tembotrione is used as a research tool in new applications such as soybean and sorghum. In terms of volume, the corn application accounted for more than 90% of the global tembotrione market in 2013. Demand for tembotrione in corn applications is expected to increase significantly in the near future owing to recent approval by the European Union and growth opportunities in Asia Pacific.

North America emerged as the global leader in the tembotrione market, accounting for more than 55% in terms of volume in 2013. The U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA) approved tembotrione in 2007. The herbicide is registered and is available in most states in the U.S. Mexico is another major consumer of tembotrione in North America. The region was followed by Europe in terms of volume in 2013. Tembotrione was approved in Austria and Hungary in 2007. Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands approved the herbicide by the year 2009. The European Union approved tembotrione for cornfield applications in 2013. Consequently, the market for tembotrione in Europe is likely to expand significantly in the near future. Moreover, Asia Pacific offers high potential for tembotrione, as the product has not been launched in every corn-growing country in the region. In Rest of the World (RoW), Brazil and Argentina were the major consumers of tembotrione in 2013. Given its high production of corn, Brazil consumes a large amount of tembotrione every year. It was among the few countries to approve tembotrione in the initial years of the launch.
