Two of the brilliant members of Lewisville Flower Mound Oncology Team highlights the need for more women in Oncology

Lewisville, TX — According to a study that analyzes the demand and supply for oncology services, the demand for oncologistswill increase by 48 percent, by the year 2020. The supply, however, is expected to grow at a much slower rate. The same study also highlights the disparity between a number of male and female oncologists.

As of now, only 30 percent of oncologists in the US are women. According to Dr. NeerjaDesari, a board certified Medical Oncologist and Hematologist working for Lewisville Flower Mound Oncology Center, it will be impossible to meet the demand without encouraging more women to become oncologists.

Dr. Kiran Kancharla, another female member of the Lewisville Flower Mound Oncology Center team, highlighted the role of women in oncology and said, “Women are natural caregivers, and many patients feel more comfortable being treated by a female oncologist. This is particularly true in case of breast cancer, gynecologic cancer, and other types of cancers more prevalent in female patients.”

The founder of the Lewisville Flower Mound Oncology Center, Dr. Gregory Echt, agrees withboth his colleagues and appreciates their role at the Texas Oncology Center in Lewisville. He calls them two irreplaceable members, whose compassion, commitment and contributions stand unmatched.

As a man who has founded a number of cancer care and oncology centers across Texas, Dr. Echt admits that there is a dire need for more female oncologists in future.

He believes that every institute needs to play its part in encouraging women in oncology. “In order to overcome the rising demand for oncologists, it is essential to encourage more women to join the league. Medical institutes and cancer care centers can play a key role in this mission.”

Comprehensive cancer care requires caregivers to be compassionate and supportive. It involves building personal relationships with the patients and their families. Studies have proven that female oncologists are able to offer emotional support that can enhance the level of care.
