On the cover of the first issue of the Captain America comic book, the costumed hero punched out Adolf Hitler. But the flag draped super hero came to the conflict late. Milton Caniff had already declared war against the totalitarian powers in his popular newspaper syndicated feature, Terry And The Pirates, as Terry, Pat Ryan, The Dragon Lady and the characters of the newspaper comic fought the Japanese in China, Terrys base of operation. Captain America and Terry were not the only comics creations to face off against the Axis Powers. Virtually every four color hero worth his salt confronted the enemies of America on tales that became as much propaganda as entertainment vehicles. Indeed, some comics characters such as Spy Smasher and Blackhawk were created specifically to take the war to the enemy.
Nor were the comics heroes alone. Heroes in every manisfestation of popular culture signed on for the duration. Americans knew who was the enemy and we knew who we were!
Today, as the twenty-first century begins, Americans face a totalitarian enemy more pervasive than at any time in this nation?s history, Islam being only the most obvious and barbaric manifestation at our door, and popular culture is strikingly timid and silent against this corrosive enemy. Author/illustrator Hanther has been fascinated with the adventure comics famously distributed in newspapers by national syndicates and, after almost 35 years of producing Tandra in ink-on-paper publications, CD-ROM releases, and with the Tandra web site, the comics creator has decided to present the most recent manifistation of the Tandra saga in an on line colour page format inspired by the high adventure newspaper features from the prime era of newspaper syndication. Hanther comes to this exciting new concept after over thirty years in the commercial illustration and advertising fields. Hanther began his career producing teaching aids for children. He then moved to New York City where he worked with the Marvel Comics Group contributing to many projects including development of the Marvel Comics Conan periodical.Though Hanther?s major life project has been the continuous publication of the Tandra series, Hanther has also worked extensively in the commercial advertising field creating ads for such clients as Coke, Ford, Pizza Hut, and McAlister?s Deli. In addition to work for various agencies, Hanther finds the time to create a weekly commentary for Clear Channel radio web sites nationwide.
